Come to the
LARPD Board Meeting for your input.
The skatepark is in a dirt field without a place for parents to watch their children. The skaters have nowhere to sit or even get a drink. Don't let the stereotype of skateboarding get in the way of a good, clean, athletic and challenging sport. Livermore has already imposed the "bad seed" stereotype on the skatepark by neglecting it's facilities. There are mostly families and good kids that use the park and a few who ruin the image for the rest of us. Please sign up on the email list below to keep posted on meetings and help support the skatepark! Skatepark Summary and Positioning Statement The park is crowded and there should be more skating surface including a beginner and advanced area TO BE INCLUDED IN THE FIVE YEAR VISION FOR THE PARK. The LARPD needs to hear from Sunken Gardens Park users and citizens so they will install basic facilities at the skatepark that any other park gets (drinking fountain, payphone, benches, fence). It can be a great asset to our City and our youth if we support it as other cities have supported theirs. Come join myself and other families and kids on Saturday mornings at the skatepark and see the positive influence this park has. We bring a large water cooler for everyone to share. We teach each other new skills. We have a community that is Healthy for our youth. Please come to the meetings to support and expand this environment. Come and participate in advocating and creating a Skatepark vision for Livermore! Generations to come will be grateful. For your reference, the LARPD Meeting Time and Agenda Page can be found here. Please be sure to VOTE in November for a new LARPD Leadership!!! One that listens to the community voice! LIVERMORE NEEDS CHANGE! |
SPECIAL SKATEPARK MEETING!!!!This Wednesday, March 27th, 5:45pm here."Give the park some respect. Why do you think the kids will take care of it when it is built in the middle of a mud hole with no facilities and nowhere for adults to supervise their kids or the park in general? There is no drinking fountain, no bench and no place for the small kids to learn." THE LARPD FACILITIES COMMITTEE HAS SUGGESTED A SHORT TERM FIX TO TEMPORARILY FENCE THE PARK AND RESTRICT ITS USE EVEN BEFORE HAVING THE PUBLIC MEETING! THIS IS DISAPPOINTING BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A LONG TERM SOLUTION FOR OVER A YEAR SINCE IT OPENED. THERE SHOULD BE PUBLIC INPUT PRIOR TO THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE MAKING SUGGESTIONS LIKE THIS. WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE MEETINGS WITH TEN TO FIFTEEN PEOPLE IN SUPPORT OF THE SKATEPARK FOR OVER ONE YEAR NOW TRYING TO FIND SOLUTIONS. THEY HAVE IGNORED US AND THIS IS THE PROPOSAL GIVEN TO BE DISCUSSED ON THE AGENDA AT THIS SPECIAL MEETING. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE LARPD BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS FAILING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF LIVERMORE YOUTH. WE HAVE FEWER SOCCER FIELDS THAN DUBLIN OR PLEASANTON. WE HAVE 75,000 PERSON POPULATION AND DUBLIN HAS 15,000. THIS IS A TRAGEDY THAT THIS CITY CANNOT PROVIDE THE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS THAT OTHER SMALLER CITIES CAN ON SMALLER AMOUNTS OF RESOURCES. OUR SKATEPARK IS AN EXAGGERATED EXAMPLE OF THE LACK OF ATTENTION TO OUR KIDS. THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE PARENTS AND SKATERS WILL REALLY HAVE TO GIVE INPUT ON THE SKATEPARK. IF YOU WISH TO HAVE A DECENT EXISTING SKATEPARK AND A FIVE YEAR PLAN ON ITS GROWTH AND SUPPORT, I SUGGEST THAT YOU ATTEND THIS MEETING. TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO ATTEND AND WRITE LETTERS TO THE LARPD IN SUPPORT OF AN EXPANDED SKATEPARK AND 5 YEAR VISION PLAN. I HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE ON MARCH 27TH AT 5:45 PM. Sincerely, Doug Renner

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
LIVERMORE SKATERS NEED YOUR SUPPORT ON OCTOBER10th 7:30PM!
Livermore Area Parks and Recreation District is holding a meeting on October 10th to determine what improvements will be made to the Sunken Gardens Skatepark! We need your support to help direct the efforts to add some benches, grass, drinking fountains, and some picnic tables as well as expand the actual skating facility so that more than one person at a time can ride it. There is currently $225,000 that has been budgeted for the improvement of the facility according to the Sept 2001 issue of the LARPD Leisure Times (pdf format). This is an excerpt...
As the park has cost $245,000 for construction of what is existing. It seems that $225,000 will buy the landscaping needed with money left over to expand the skating facility. The original landscaping budget approved was $160,000. Maybe the Board is already thinking of expansion. Let's show up to make our voices heard! If you would like to show your support but cannot show up, Click here to share your views.
The skatepark is a family facility and community park. It is one of the most utilized 11,000 sq. foot structures in any of Livermore's parks. It has an estimated average of over 80- 100 people per day on the weekends and about half that during the week. My young neighbor just had his 10th birthday at the park and he couldn't say enough about how fun it was. He did mention that they had to bring their own chairs and a table for the food and birthday cake. He also expressed his vote in favor of the idea of expansion of the park as he is still a beginner. "It is hard to get time at the park when there are few people around so I can ride safely," he said. In the future, he and his parents would like to see another smaller bowl area where those new to skateboarding can learn and practice yet not be nervous about being run over by the experienced skaters that go pretty fast.
"That's the problem with it (Livermore skatepark) being only one bowl. Plus Dublin's park is better for the birthday party part, but the skatepark isn't as good."
Come to the meeting on October 10th and support the improvements and share your ideas on how to best utilize the budgeted funds. We need Livermore voters, youth, parents, schoolteacher, police force, and visitors to come and support the effort and show the Board of Directors that our skatepark deserves attention. Here is a Map to the Meeting at City Council Chambers 3575 Pacific Ave, Livermore CA. Right next to the Skatepark. We hope to see you there.
